Of course, as you state, the pad should be kept off any painted surfaces.
If you have any problems with hand-eye co-ordination, just apply a strip of
masking tape along the edge
of your trim, before doing any cleaning or polishing.
I regularly clean the glass on my S-10 pickup, which doesn't have any trim
along the edges of the glass,
and have never damaged the paint. Just fold the pad down to a tight edge
under your fingers and you
can clean right up to the edge of the glass.
On our Corvairs, once you have done the initial galss and windshield trim
polishing, perhaps using masking tape as a guide,
you can clean the glass repeatedly without ever getting close to the painted
surfaces. The aluminum trim can easily be
damaged if you use too much finger pressure, but once again, develop this
technique on a scrap section of trim or glass
until you have confidence.
