Per Bob Helt, and he seems to have this nailed down, avoid any oil with 
the ILSAC-GF4 rating (and therefore the "Energy Conserving" starburst). 
Mostly this will be the 5W-XX oils for newer cars.  All major North 
American brands produce oils in this category  -- can't speak to AU -- 
so you have to read labels carefully, not just brands.  Synthetics are 
typically superior oils, but the playing field is not level for labeling 
an oil "synthetic".
