Somethiing we here master gunsmiths do to classic rifles is to chase the 
thread gently with a lathe bit, just taking off the tar and rust, not making 
things smaller.  There wasn[t much adherance to standards in the old guns.. 
kinda like corvairs

I think there is a classic gadget to do the same by hand, it looks like a 
thread die broke in half with an adjustable guide "V" to keep it snug but 
not cutting on the threads, just polishing.  I guess someone could actually 
use half a die, just use a leather glove and elbow grease to carefully 
polish the threads ....but then first you haft to catch the rabbit ... I 
mean crack the thread die ...
