Hello All,
Does anyboby know of documentation on doing a REAR engine V8 conversion?
The old adage applies. You can put anything anywhere, if you have enough
money. There are two main problems with conversions into the Corvair. First
is weight distribution. The Corvair motor was about as much weight as you
would like to have hanging out back for a normal car. Almost all rear or Mid
conversions have the option of front mounting the cooling system and
battery. That helps the front rear distribution issue, but the less weight out
there, the better. That is why the BOP/Rover Aluminum V8 motor was popular,
although several Iron-blocks have been hung out over the years. Want to
impress your friends with wheelies? The other main problem is the direction of
rotation of the Corvair motor. To install any motor in the tail, and use a
standard rotation Corvair transaxle, you will have to run the motor
"backwards". There are several other motors, over the years, that ran the
direction of the Corvair. None of them were high performance models. Some specific
motors were converted for Marine use, where, on larger inboards, a pair of
motors drove two, counter-rotating propellers in the water, which made the
ships go straight. Chevy V8 motors - Way before the LS1 - and V6's and
probably others. Those early Chevy motors, with rare exceptions, had iron
blocks and were pretty heavy. GM didn't have the casting techniques they have
now, and weight wasn't such a priority.
I have a long term goal of putting one of Chevy's aluminum V6 motors into
the back of a Corvair. with 262 cu in, there should be enough power, and not
much more weight than a BOP V8. I have almost everything I need . Now, If
I could find an exhaust crossover set-up from a GM Syclone, the turbo
version would probably be "interesting"!
The aluminum BOP converted cars do come on the market once in a while.
