If you go the spacer route, try and find the kind that's a rubber ring that
goes under the spring. These are used by alignment and frame shops to set
ride height and are (were?) available in various thicknesses. This type will
not affect spring rate and are a good fix.  Also note that while
conventional shocks do not affect ride height, gas shocks do; their internal
pressure increases when they are being overworked and this raises the car
some. Mercedes used to use such an approach with their pre-'72 swing axle
rear suspension. They called it a "compensator".
