 No doubt, modern unleaded gas definitely helps this situation. Lead used to just crud things up something awful. And those deposits would get superhot, next thing you know, pingpingping... 

Increasing squish helps. Doing ANYTHING to lower engine temperature is a BIG help!

Of course the engine should be deflashed and clean. But that is on the 
outside. One of the biggest causes of pinging is carbon accumulation on 
the piston crowns and the heads, effectively increasing the compression 
ratio while adding hot carbon to the equation. I have effectively 
eliminated pinging in dozens, if not hundreds of cars with a simple 
treatment (sometimes two) of Techron in the gas tank.
