Most noobies make this mistake (I did... but it was years ago).
The entire exhaust system on a Corvair must hang from the engine. The
engine is mounted on rubber mounts, so it moves in relation to the body.
The exhaust system is too short to absorb these movements, like a long
system can on a front engine car.
BTW, the 64 style muffer hanger has been unavailable for a long time. I
need some! I make do with the 60 to 63 style, which is not made to fit
the oval muffler. A round muffler has been used on many an early, the 60
to 63 use them OEM. IIRC the K car had a perfect round muffler/tail pipe
to fit an early. I do not recall the particulars.

>As most of you know by now, I have a 64 Monza coupe and I am restoring it (95% done now). It has an after-market Midas round muffler on it with a universal muffler hanger. I had to replace the crossover pipe a few days ago (that's an other story) and now the muffler and tailpipe will not fit under the fender properly (the tailpipe is the problem, it hits the back body panel. That is due to the new crossover being stock length. The Midas people must have cut a bit off the end of the crossover pipe to get the muffler to fit. I will be getting a stock OVAL muffler and T/P in the future (low on cash at the time) and I hope to use the original style muffler hanger. I can't tell what it looks like from the Clark's catalog picture. Where does the hanger screw on to on the body?
