The factory used a special main bearing at the flywheel
end of the engine.  It was designed to silence a crankshaft
noise made by a sideways movement of the crank that
resembled a main bearing failure.  My memory on this is a
little hazy on the exact details.  Perhaps the 'hole' in the
bearing is offset .0006 towards the driver side.  Very early
or rebuilt engines will probably not have this special bearing.

Have your drain oil analyzed to determine bearing content.

Thanks to all for the suggestions regarding the knock in my recently rebuilt
110 PG.  At the suggestion of CF Mann, I have posted a short video of the
engine running.  The sound quality is not great when I play it back on my
computer, but I hope it may be enough for some of you to recognize the
problem and help me pinpoint the trouble before I tear into the engine
again.

Don't forget that the switch was moved from the bottom of the early  4
speeds (thru '65), to the side of the transmission.

After giving Ralph his due, Corvair fans list the Mustang, horsepower, manufacturing costs, and cheap gas as the main reasons for the Corvair?s end. Grant,
I did this last summer to both of the window motors in my 73 Thunderbird.
I was looking on e-bay for used or remanufactured motors to replace mine.
Drivers side I had to "help" as it skipped, and passenger side I could hear
but it would not move.
Found the guy selling the kits, and bought them. It took me longer to pull
the motors out than it did to fix them.
Amazing.........saved a couple hundred bucks by fixing them myself.
Most of the "rebuilts", that's all they have to replace.............

Thanks for that Charlie,

That puts the story into the historical perspective which I also believe to
be most correct.

I think that I will print that and have it with me in my Vairs.

put a shop towel on the floor, set the camera on it and hit record. Place the camera under the engine, the rev it like you did the first time. post that as a comparison to the first.
you were talking about a low end noise, maybe the sound can be captured from down below?

anyway, in listening to your first video, it sounded to me like the knock DOES increase in frequency as the engine speed is increased. I may be mistaken though...

second and last, I am not an expert, but the sound makes me think a piston slapping at the top of the cylinder??
