"I was a kid in the '50's, so I remember them. FYI they didn't spread salt
back then nearly as heavily as they do today. Salt (as measured by the
pound
per mile) usage keeps going up every year. Today, they're out there laying
it
down thick even before the first snowflake hits the ground,"
And you're talking about LAST year, or some other year in the past.....you
sure as hell aren't "current" with the situation this year! Salt has more
than quadrupled in price since last year (over $70/ton and climbing daily!)!
Even at that price, salt is in VERY short supply, and EVERY
state/county/municipality (including everything in the Detroit metro-area!)
is/has been on an allocation-basis with the suppliers since last summer at
about 75% of what they normally purchase. With the hellish winter we're
having this year around the Eastern US....that's about half the salt that is
actually needed. Many governments are completely out of salt and can't get
any more for any amount of money. Our county is only salting intersections,
and those very lightly. The Indiana Toll Road is being forced to spread a
10% salt-sand mix due to the worsening salt shortage. Sifto Salt in
Goderich ONT Canada is STILL running vessels in the Great Lakes with a pair
of Coast Guard ice-breakers per vessel-load; TRYING to keep Chicago from
imploding with every snow-shower!
"If you haven't lived here within the last 10 years, you are clueless."
Apparently, there's a lot of that going around!
