for running -- running well is another matter -- most simple sensor
failures will put a lot of computerized cars into "open loop" (limp
home) mode, but the car will run. I had a Fiero that nearly passed
emissions testing, except for the exhaust leak and the plain missing O2
sensor ... (long story about a car I had just bought and the testing
station was just down the street ..)
Sorry I can't offer any info on your Probe's ignition, but I'd be
checking the fuel pump fuse and relay and fuel pressure too, before I
worry about that ignition -- remember, it does run for five seconds,
about the time the ignition crank circuit will run a fuel pump (and
probably the ignition - check for an ignition fuse) before the computer
takes over.
The overheat situation does give one call to reflect on what happened in
the first place however ...
