Intake valve stem seals are pretty much required
when the valve stems are vertical, but with horizontal stems, like on
the Corvair and others, the seals are generally considered optional by
most of the folks that I know.

William Wynne of FlyCorvair.com fame told me NOT to install intake valve
seals when I was looking into building a flight Corvair engine. I wish now
that I had asked him why.

don't think you can get an accurate measurement with the guide installed
-- isn't the thing tapered on the outside end, so that you can get it
started in the hole? if it's .500, what is holding it in? I'm not
talking any out just to measure them!
Nobody has mentioned "knurling" as a third alternative -- generally the
technique is used when the guides are not "replaceable", but it can be
done on a Corvair.
