As someone who remembers those old clocks, a minute a day wasn't bad.   If 
you adjusted them as necessary every day or so, they were crudely self  
correcting--if slow they sped up a bit when adjusted forward and vice  versa.  
But if a minute a day is too much then I would convert it to a  quartz 
movement.
