All, I have been reading everyone's comments with great interest and have
seen many good suggestions. I would now like to add my opinions and
observations for you to ponder. I want to preface my comments with a
statement of support for Jackson's comments. They did exactly what he wanted
them to do. Get people to react and talk about CORSA's future. It's not easy
being a CORSA Director. I have been a Director for six months now and have
endured six months of utter chaos and frustration. It has taken a lot of
enjoyment of our hobby away from me. And if you ask other current Directors
you will get the same answer. But it has not dampened my hope of helping
CORSA move into the future.
Let me start with one word and its definition.
Nostalgia: A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the
past
Nostalgia is Part of the reason this club was started, it has been part of
this club for forty years, and regrettably it is what is adding to this club's
demise now. I feel most of us on this list suffer from nostalgia. Not that
it's a bad thing. I suffer from it myself. I would rather drive my Loadside
than my three year old van, or my 1936 F-30 Farmall as opposed to a new
CaseIH or CNH or whatever they call the tractor company now. And I would
much rather sit across from, and talk to people face to face at an ICE
meeting, or at a CORSA convention. But that is how I prefer to do things and
so do most of you.
In my biography, when I ran for Central director, I stated that
communication was the most important aspect to keep CORSA moving forward. I
would like to amend that thought now to read, e-communication is one of the
most important aspects to move Corsa forward.
Case in point is my 17 year old son. If I want to get ahold of him, the best
way is to text him. And if you watch anyone these days, especially those
under the age of 30, you will notice they communicate mostly through
texting. And if they are not texting they are on facebook talking to
friends, or watching UTube. For most people born after 1980 and for some of
us, this is the way they communicate. They don't care so much to go to a
club meeting that's two hours away or a convention that is across the
country, when they can hop on the net and go anywhere, or talk to anyone
around the globe. The web is where it's at for the next generation of
Corvair owners and this is where CORSA should be headed. And if you don't
believe me, why are you here on this e-mail list, or Corvair Center, or
Fastvairs, or on e-bay buying or selling parts, or looking through Clark's
Corvair parts catalogue online.
Here is a question for you. How far is too far. Do we try to do small things
one at a time to see if it helps, or do we go completely radical? Keep the
Chapters system as it is, completely scrap CORSA as it is today and rebuild
it as a totally web based club. Possibly with no dues or minimal dues. Maybe
patterned after a Wikipedia type format. These are just things for you to
think about in depth.
Remember, nostalgia is not going to sustain this club. Thinking out of the
box will.
Thanks everyone
Jamie Reinhart
