Hi Jeff.
On my Type 2 VW conversion I used a 63A GM 10SI alternator (I think I asked for an alternator for a 1978 Camaro 350/AC or something similar.. asking for an earlier model like a '73 will give you a 63A alternator set up for external regulation) and the following information page to assist in the wiring.

It works flawlessly and cost something like $50.
(You do need to use the fan, pulley, and front cover from the Corvair alternator to facilitate the mounting and reverse operation of the alternator...assuming your engine isn't reversed.... I also swap over the new bearing which comes with the rebuilt alternator. I think our vendors will sell you an alternator already so converted.)
