<VV> Wiring harness prophylactic

I am nearing the point of actually attaching the wiring harnesses  
together in anticipation of installing the new carbs and seeing if I  
can start the car.  I really want to have some fail safes in place  
before I turn the ignition to prevent the type of mishap that led to  
my current situation.  I understand that installing a fuseable link  
in the engine compartment is the best way of doing this.  I just  
don't want to have to replace any more engine or main harnesses  
anytime soon (like ever again).  Where is the best place to install  
such a link?  I think I was told to either put it on the positive  
side of the battery (there is a red wire that is about AWG 12 gauge  
wire) that was connected to the positive battery post connector  
(forgot where the other end connected - but it had to be about 10  
inches away as that is the length of the wire), or the fuse was to be  
placed between the connection on the chassis rail next to the battery  
that the two red wires on the engine wiring harness connect to.
If you are advising, keep it simple as I am not an electrician nor a  
mechanic (although I am one hundred times the mechanic I was before I  
started to rebuild my Corvair).   Also, the wiring diagram in the '65  
manual is lacking in description at the battery juncture.
