I rotate the push rod with two fingers to find the point where the
clearance is out of the rocker. If you can rotate the rod easily, there is
still clearance. There should be a very abrupt change in torque needed to
rotate the rod at the zero clearance point.

No. Just don't press (force) the pushrod down. Your starting point is just
when the clearence is out of the rocker.
