JVH has it right. The rest of youse guys are remembering what procedure you
did, but not what was actually happening with the electrical system when
you did what you did.
Sure, the manual has you take a #10 or so wire and jump it between the
Battery and Armature terminals of the voltage regulator to "Flash The
Field". BUT, it has no effect whatsoever on the voltage regulator! It is
just a convenient spot to apply voltage to the Armature winding of the
generator. Internally, the positive terminal of the field is connected to
the Armature terminal. The negative field lead is connected to the field
terminal. When not running, the filed terminal is grounded through the
voltage regulator. So, applying +12 to the armature terminal puts current
through the field winding in the correct direction and magnetizes the iron
around the field windings. This + and - reference is for negative ground
generators, like on Corvairs.
So to repeat, there is no polarizing of a voltage regulator. There IS
polarizing of a generator field. Polarizing meaning "Flashing the Field".

One of my present projects is restoring a 1942 Sperry 60" searchlight. It
has a 6 cylinder Hercules engine. After returning it to 6 volts, I
polarized the generator. Never had to polarize the new regulator. This is
the 6 volt generator, not the 90 volt, 150 amp DC generator that powers the
800,000,000 candlepower carbon arc!

'Polarizing the regulator' is a service one performs when installing a
new unpolarized regulator, or changing the polarity of the charging system.

I like how you qualified it with the "new unpolarized regulator" part.
While it's been a year or three since I played with an old generator
regulator...NONE of them was ever purchased "unpolarized", not even the
over-priced junk from "The Prince of Darkness" (John Lucas)! I knew such
things existed and knew how to "flash" polarize them....but I never bought
one that way and consigned it to one of those "useless" factoids from the
1930's that my Dad insisted on dragging into the "modern" 1960's to inflict
on me!
As for the OP. An inexplicably draining battery is a good "tell" for a
failed/failing generator voltage regulator. The field coil is likely being
energized by a stuck regulator. But then, since the subject is currently on
replacing voltage regulators, I guess that probable cause for the battery
drain is already on the table!
