It's likely not knock, ping, nor detonation: 1) it happens with a  cold 
engine (ping, etc, typically requires a warmed engine) and goes away  with 
warming; 2) the noise is loud enough whereas the Safeguard antiknock  system 
would "see" the noise if it were ping, etc. Safeguard "ain't"  reacting.
