<VV> OT but related: What's with the extra question marks?

I recently sent a message entitled "Re:  65 monza newbie" and when later I read it in the Digest, there were single question marks following periods that I hadn't put there.  It only happened for periods within the paragraph, not at the end.

Alan, I suppose I should say "full stop" for you intrepid cross-pond Corvairists.

I'm a retired software geek and I can't leave well enough alone -- does anyone have any idea what's going on?  Is this some new Darth Nader plot to disrupt Virtual Vairs?
