<VV> Crack in brake shoe lining

While getting Christine ready for another summer of fun, I noticed the
lining on the left rear secondary brake shoe was cracked from side to
side between the rivets.  

 

The brake shoes are only about 2 years old and have about 3,000 miles on
them.  What would cause this?  Do I need to replace the shoes?
