I also did a lot of traveling around the country for my
former employer, General Motors. Back in the late '80's I
was involved in what the engineering community called a
"Beta Test" of our computer systems designed to help auto
technicians figure out problems with our then-new computer
controlled fuel induction systems. Some people called
these tests boondoggles, but I was assigned to travel to
various sites (dealerships) and run the Beta tests with
representatives from the car divisions. I remember that
there were several airports where you could rent a classic
car from the regular rental companies for a premium price.
LAX was involved as well as the Boca Raton, Florida
airport. I think San Francisco and Sacramento also
participated. Since "The General" was picking up the tab
an actual rental was out of the question for me. But it
was there for the asking if you had the coin to ante up.
Not sure if Corvairs were ever on the list but I do
remember at least one example of an air cooled VW beetle
convertible on the line. - Caveman Pete
