Driving back home they blinked or flickered a couple of times but stayed on.
I wanted to make them go off again so I could begin to track down the
problem, but twisting the headlight knob or wiggling it back and forth did not
make them go off. Also, it does not seem like a loose connection, because
driving over rough roads did not make them go out, and when they went out we were
on a smooth road and had not hit a bump or pot hole. My son said he
encountered a similar problem a couple weeks ago, and again, pushing the switch in a
leaving it for a while is what made them come back on.

Because you have already replaced the headlight switch I would replace the
floor dimmer next. The headlight switch circuit breakers I've had have
usually caused the lights to flicker fairly continuously at a steady rate--they
will not allow the lights to go out completely. The floor dimmer switch is down
in the grit and moisture and will corrode. I have had two go bad--one in a
Corvair and one in a Dodge van. Rapidly stepping on the floor dimmer to turn
it on and off has solved the problem for me ttemporarily (and saved my
skin). It is now one of the first things I replace in a Corvair. After you've
checked the dimmer if you haven't already taken off the headlight bezels and
cleaned up the grounds on the headlight frames then that is a good spring
project. But check the floor dimmer switch first; my money's on that.
