Hi Peter,
My understanding is that the racers use the 60 pound spring because  
you need that to pump oil to a front mounted oil cooler and back.  40  
pounds is fine for an engine with any variety of the stock coolers or  
a rear mounted cooler.  It probably was a nice bit of insurance on  
initial startup, but for the rest of the engine's life I'd go back to  
a stock spring.
