I will soon (or likely later) install a '66 4-speed into my '65 Monza 140.
I read in "How to Keep Your Corvair Alive" there is a need to grind relief in
the differential flange face. Does anyone have images they could forward
to me? I have not had this apart so it's all new to me. Also, are there any
modifications to the transmission that are recommended when I have it rebuilt
(i.e. change gears for close ratio, anything, etc.)? Any other advise is
welcomed.

You might not want to hear it, but I suggest you keep looking for a 66
differential to use with the 66 4-speed. Chevy decided that you need 6 bolts - I
would go with that. If you can find a bad one, broken spider gears? (Check your
local V8 Corvair guy!) you could move almost everything into that case. You
might still need a little clearance, the pinion shaft on the 65 diff is
supposedly longer - by a little bit - than the 66. Supposedly it is so close that
it only affects some cars. Ask, don't assume. - Seth Emerson
