betting on the switch after getting it wet. if the rivet for the terminal  is 
the type with an open hole(some were solid)  in it, it probably took on  
water. unplug it to be sure. sometimes i put a very very small dab of silicone  on 
the hole on that type sender. the correct level should still be ok on that  
dipstick , just take more oil to reach it.
