The VW cases were aluminum/magnesium alloy, and as such, was a fair bit 
better about resisting corrosion. But, sit one on the ground for a few 
months in the rain, and the bottom does corrode substantially. As I 
recall, the Corvair fan is a straight up magnesium alloy.

Without some sort of coating, they would eventually just turn into a
pile of white dust, so I suspect they had some surface treatment of 
some
sort.
Wish I knew what they did with the old mag VW cases ...
