That's called time shifting. The problem that has developed since the VCR
became popular is that a lot of cable (and even satellite) systems require
a "converter" box that only lets thru one channel at a time. Thus in order
to record one channel while watching another, you have to have two
converter boxes (usually an added expense). And they have to be set on the
channel you want to record. I feel it's one of the major reasons why the
use of time shifting has decreased dramatically.
