okay, finally, here's a newspaper article about the crash that gives all 
these tire guys reason to enforce their suggestions --

from the [Medford, OR] Mail Tribune, 18 Nov 1998 --

"The decision stems in part from a crash on Jan. 13, 1996, near the 
Santiam Pass that killed Kathryn Nelson, 47, and her stepdaughter, 
Christiana Nelson, 31."
