Of course -- holes above the "water" line don't need emergency patching 
because, since they are "dry", they are by definition not leaking -- if 
it isn't leaking, it isn't an emergency. Gum, and I've had best results 
with "bubble gum", although it is not my favorite to chew, will work on 
dry holes, too, but those are also good candidates for a less emergency 
style  permanet repair.

The other old-timey emergency remedy, which I never had really good 
results with the one time I tried it, is Fels-Naptha bar soap. Yes, they 
still sell it, you just have to look carefully.
