My 8-door is much regretted, but in the end I had to sell it for several
reasons:
a) we had a tyre burst in a modern car, followed by a trip into the barrier
sideways at 65 mph and then a rollover and a spin back across the (French)
interstate on our roof. The whole family escaped with minor cuts and
bruises. In an FC we'd have been dead, no question. There would have been
doors flying everywhere!
b) I got so fed up with the pilot bushing giving trouble (I got clutch drag
over and over again, and I got really fed up with pulling the tranny). Never
did get to the bottom of the problem, but sure got fed up trying! Then it
blew a jug because it was overheating long-term without me being able to
identify the cause (too late, I found out that it was because a piece of
insulation had fallen down over the inside of the air vent in the side!),
and my patience snapped!
c) was the biggest reason. The ride on our dreadful roads was just
unacceptable. The way the van used to get a bouncy motion set up as a
consequence of the short wheelbase and longer length made it virtually
undriveable in places here. There is a particular place here where there is
a lane that I drive along every day, with a steepish hill and a bend at the
bottom with three gradually increasing bumps (undulations, perhaps). The
oscillations that used to get set up increased in intensity with each bump,
and on the third one my head used to hit the roof (yes, really).
So I regretfully sold it. Wish I still had it, and in some ways I agree that
FCs are better than Lates which are better than Earlies, but I am coming
round to the proposition that Lates are better than everything else...
Finally, here's my 8-door if you want to see it:
http://20cc.com/shroom4.htm - it's the primer brown one in the middle. I
love the way the guys I sold it to have their showroom's URL as 'shroom'!
They are trying to set up as Corvair specialists in Scotland - good luck to
them on that one! They bought the van from me 4 years ago and it looks as if
it is still rotting in the same Scottish field...
Cheers
Alan
