<VV> Distributor question

While rebuilding my distributor, I noticed that there is a lot of 
vertical play when the distributor is assembled.  I find that I can 
install a second washer between the two washers at the top of the shaft 
which will remove most of the play.  My question is whether or not this 
is a good idea.  Is the play intentionally built to a large dimension? I 
can't find anything in the shop manual, or tech tips on this...  any 
comments or suggestions would be welcome.
