for the small personal shop i think the air operated end bumper lift type
jack is the way to go (with good jack stands!) you can get to all of the
underneath of the vehicle. it is quick easy setup. i had a small hoist here , but
it was in the way of working on the center of the truck, so i sold it. it is
fine for engine changes and wheel work. of course this does not apply to a full
sized frame lift hoist.(takes up more space and height .
the bonus with the jack: with a small amount of work you can make a board
out of heavy plywood to use it as another engine work table when . plus it
rolls out of the way easily.
these are just my personal observations. every bodies situations are
different.
