The Corvair's 'economical nature' was the cause of its demise - it
should have been marketed as a more expensive 'sports' car, and sold to
a different market who would have appreciated it.
The 'Vair (and its' competitors) were produced as an answer to the imports
which were more economical and invariably handled better than the huge domestic
models. It wasn't until the Monza, with its' bucket seats and "4 on the
floor" came along that the "sporty car" label was created and the competitors
(noticeably Lee Iacocca at Ford) took notice and brought out their own which
could be had with a 6 for those that wanted the look and a SBF for those who
wanted power.
Of course, they didn't handle worth a damn, but most Americans didn't know
that cars COULD handle, just thought that those who went fast--in a 'Vair or an
import--were simply reckless drivers.
