<VV> shifting into 4th gear findings

i moved the coupler back (towards the engine side) meaning the shifter tube was about to pull away from the coupler. the gears were very difficult to shift with the throw to 4th gear being shorter, 1st and 3rd seemed difficult to get into, 4th did not work.
went the other direction, with the coupler moved way up into the shfit tube, the shifter moved way down, almost to the passenger seat when in 4th, still no turning of the wheels in 4th.
went back even further the other direction, ie the coupler was about to come out of the shift tube, still nothing in 4th.
Went back again with the coupler back into the shift tube, not as far as before, but about a 1/16 inch past my scribe mark that i put on the coupler when i was down in 4th as far as i could go when all this started.
1st thru 3rd and reverse were back to working ok again in this position, when i went into 4th, the wheels did turn, but slow, too slow.
at this point when in 2nd, the gear shift lever was vibrating a bit, maybe cause the car was up off the ground.
before i put it back on the ground to try again, any suggestions? Should i take the sideplate off thge tranny and have someone that knows about transmissions look at it?
i have done about all the adjustment it seems that one can do.
this is a rebuilt tranny about 2k miles ago, worked fine, also the quick shift seemingly worked fine all this time.
thanks in advance for the advice,
Bill
