If the throw is not enough to get 4th gear engaged, you need to shorten the
total length of the shift tube (push coupler into shift tube). Or move the
seat back, if it is stopping the shift knob.
The coupler, while keyed to the shift tube, still has a slight amount of
rotational movement with respect to the tube. This adjustment can cause
lack of reverse engagement.

Craig replies: the coupler telescopes in and out of the shift tube. It
sounds like yours needs to be a little longer. See page 6D-17 in the '61
base manual for the simple procedure. If length isn't the problem, you
probably have an internal issue in the transmission.
