<VV> 4 speed shifter

I assume you mean the yoke at the trans. end; the one at the floor shift 
link doesn't come off. Obviously you're not wacking it hard enough. With the 
clamp off, it 'should' slip out of the tube.
Not sure what you mean by cast/welded end...
