we had oil pan warmers , battery warmers , cabin air heaters available in  
the northeast years ago.  your oil turned to glue at any below zero temps  so if 
car was parked outside in the winter here most had a heavy extension cord  
attached.  if you checked your oil on a cold day, it would be almost as  thick 
as grease , so not doing its job for several crucial moments when started  up 
cold.  up north of here it is a serious problem  on any oil lubed  object , 
even electric air compressors in a cold area...modern oils help some  now.
some people even put a light bulb next to the battery to help it on super  
cold nights etc..
