<VV> Detailing '63 fold-down rear seat back

I'm seeking advice on cleaning and detailing the fold-down rear seat back  on 
my '63 Monza coupe--you know, the part that becomes a shelf after the seat  
back is folded down.  Is this like so many other interior  pieces of earlies 
(e.g. kick panels, rear parcel shelf), made of painted  cardboard or is this of 
sturdier stock?  What cleaning product can I safely  use on it to clean off 
surface scuffs, etc.?
