With all due respect, you seem to have missed the point.
"Human factor' engineering has nothing to do with safety and everything
to do with placing blame. If the 'legal beagles' decide something made
today is 'different' they can and will make it an issue to remove blame
and responsibility from their client. It has become the responsibility of the
corporations to not make anything that would vary from what the customer
is accustomed to.
That was the point.
There have been a few cars with dash mounted shifters but the current
thinking for American vehicles is to not have anything that could produce
a stabbing action, projecting back towards the occupants. Variation from
that could open an American corporation for criticism.
At one time it was impossible for an American to file against any Japanese
company. Perhaps that is still the case but if not, at least it is still less
likely for a suit to be brought against Honda or Toyota no matter what they
build.
