it won't fire up until I release the key switch.

I had exactly the same problem on my 70 Mustang way back in the 80's. It was
a bad key switch. I tested it with a jumper from the battery to the coil as
you did. Put a test light from ground to the coil and crank it. See if you
have a light when the key is in "Start" and "run". You should in both
positions. If not, I'll betcha you've got a bad key switch.

<UN MEGA SNIP> (ooh, I love that new word!)
This would have to be a double failure then... When the engine is cranking,
the yellow (or black/yellow) wire from the starter solenoid to the coil (+)
supplies direct 12V to the coil. I'll go check a '65 switch to make sure,
but in some other Chevys of the same era (pre-ACC position switches) the IGN
terminal on the switch is SUPPOSED to go dead during cranking and that
design relied 100% on the solenoid for coil power during cranking. Check if
your coil gets 12V during cranking. If not, check the wire to the solenoid
and the solenoid "I" terminal for 12V during cranking. Likely a bad wire,
solenoid, or connection.
