John,
As a solid Sulfur should have no odor, but I have smelled sulfur crystals and there is a faint odor. If you warm it without burning you get a stronger smell.
I wouldn't call SO2 astringent - I'd call it pungent. It would be forming an acid in your nose as you smelled it - nasty stuff.
