i had one like that some time ago after the guy drove it too far without a  
belt.
it ended up being the top came off the piston.  which ended up being a  great 
hard luck trophy, along with the spark plug it smacked. i just replaced  that 
one piston and checked all the rest , along with a disclaimer of any future  
success with that motor.
