Not too long ago, a post was placed mentioning using a bulb #1847 to replace the instrument panel lamps (1816 -13V 4.29 watt, 1895 14V 3.78 watt) ....Not a good idea, as the 1847 bulb is a 6.3 volt 0.38 cp Flashlight bulb...it might be bright for a few minutes at 13 volt, but not for long.
I did find an alternative listed by GE lighting that is the same bayonet size BA9s, that at 14V is 4.62 watts, but that is not much brighter by wattage, than the 1816....I haven't tried to find it locally yet, but I will as an alternative. There is a BA9s bulb that is used in reading lamps but it is halogen and is a 13.2V 24.16 watt bulb which would draw nearly 2 amps per bulb, so our Corvair wiring and fuse setup wouldn't like that very much!
The LED approach may be the only alternative without modifications that are not worthwhile...My 10 cents worth. I found one supplier, but there are many that make the 12 volt substitute for 1816 & 1893 in white, in quantities of 10-29 are $5.95, an 100 + are $4.65ea.
