You had to be there!
It was a cool convention. temps were in the high 60s, with a cool breeze
from the ocean. Still, the guys from Washington and Canada were seeking
shade, while I, from central Illinois, was seeking the sun for warmth.
Must have been just right.
Tim Mahler is still CORSA president. Scott Morehead has stepped up to the
VP position. Sarah Beltrami is continuing as Secretary and Tony Vizyak has
returned to be Treasury again.
The convention was ran well in that easy California kind of way. The Rally
was well organized. The Econorun easy to follow as it should be <and a
blast to do! > Both had great scenery, but I, even as navigator, had
little time to look, the driver less. Hills, curves, items to watch for
such as the next direction, dirt on the road. Had a great time.
Autocross was easy to follow -- and challenging enough for the experts. I do
not think anyone was off course. The Street stock cars only hit one
pylon -- ALL of them. I hit more than that my first run out :-( . I
ran a street car in IS-3 with street tires. Kept over driving the car, my
excuses? Accoustomed to slicks with the #3 car, not used to the car,
didn't want to break the car I borrowed, blah blah blah. My favorite
excuse is that I didn't want to show up the owner of the car so I purposesly
lost <NOT! GGGG>
Duane Luckow ran the Concours very well. Fine Job. 34 or 36 cars. Most
were Excellent looking cars. I helped judge the late models, getting the
easy job of writing done the scores the others determined looking under the
car doing the undercarriage.
The Car Display had plenty of nice cars as well. We may have stuffed them
into too small an area though. It worked, but took a little longer to get
them parked. The small area made it great for spectators though. Easier to
see all the great cars and FCs -- and that Corvair powered bar.
The Perservation Award -- for the best factory Stock restored vehicle went
to Kent Sullivans Canadian late model (66?) convertible. Very nice car.
Kent showed it for the first time in Portland.
The Mitchell -- for the best overall Concours car -- went to one of Bill
Jabs vehicles -- I think it was the Greenbrier. Bill also won the Mitchell
in Portland. very very nice Corvairs.
Remember Warren LeVeques report on Willow Springs a week ago? remember
Mark Wright edging Warren out for FTD at the road course? I figured Warren
would have an advantage with the shorter wheelbase at the autocross. The
course had several switch backs that wanted you to pivot around (2 cone plus
turn around, but tight at speed) Mark still bested Warran by about half a
ssecond. Mark had a tire warmer, and Warren didn't -- wonder if that was
the difference ? Mark's car sounded great and he drove it very well.
Marked earned the Yenko FTD autocross award, presented to him at the
banquet by .....Warren.
For those who don't know. The Cole is awarded to the competitor who does
the best , all around, in the comeptitive events at the convention (using
the same vehicle). The events could change but have been the Concours,
Rally, Econo-run and Autocross for many years. Although he has competed in
various individual events before he was new to the Cole Competition. An
article on the Corvair was in the March Communique, (footnote: he changed
springs back to stock to be sure to meet CORSA rules) I borrowed the car
for the autocross, and did not do so well. The Corvair merited over 95
points in Concours, won his class in the autocross, and was the best MPG in
the econo-run (overall! ) We were not in the top 5 in the Rally, but I
suspect we were top ten. The Cole winner for 2008 is Jim Allen Jr of
Phoenix AZ with a 1965 Corsa coupe.
