DO NOT WELD THE NUTS!

The nuts float, all three of them -- the converter centers on it's hub 
and the center of the crankshaft -- that is all the alignment you get or 
need. The bolts just hold the two pieces tight together, and their 
alignment is not critical, proper torque is -- the "slop" described in 
the nut is normal, there should be no "slop" between the flex plate and 
the converter when the bolts are tightened.

Worn, rounded edges on the nuts is abnormal -- they should be nice and 
rectangular with spring loaded "keepers" attached.  Sounds like they 
possibly were damaged with miss use of power tools or are possiboly the 
wrong part.
