<VV> Carb repair update

My father welded a piece of metal 1/2" wide and 1 1/2 " long with a  
hexagonal thumb rest about 3/4 " across on the right side of the  
crossover near the right carb.  There is never a need to touch the  
crossover at any other place to increase throttle.
