<VV> Carb repair update

I did not see a "distinct squirt of gas" when I used the crossover
tube to give it gas in the accessory mode; just a cloud of vapor near
the venturi on the right. I do know that I have a tear in the left
carb paper gasket (the one on top of the two that connect the carb to
the head). The tear (1/8 ") was on the area that fits around the
mounting pole and to the outside and since I don't have any
replacements and it didn't look like it was a critical area, I went
ahead and reinstalled it. I'm pretty sure that the vacuum balance
tube is ok (I put screw type clamps on them). How can you detect a
vacuum leak at the base of a carb anyway? Remember, I can't even get
it to run, now. I do know that the carbs are set tight to the head.
I'm going to try to adjust the idle adjusting screw as mentioned (and
slightly means... 1 turn - 2?) , but it will be after several "honey-
dos" and so may end up being tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advise, I'm sure we'll soon solve this mystery
