Just wanted to provide an update to the catalytic converter that I added to my 69 Monza (which has all smog gear removed by previous owner).
I installed the device about 6 months ago. At the time I installed it, some of the folks on this list cautioned that an over-rich mixture of fuel/air could cause the converter to clog, resulting in a "sulfur/rotten egg" smell.
Indeed, when i accelerated over 35 or 40 mph there was a strong smell.
However, I then changed the jets in both carbs from #51, down to #48. The smell immediately disappered.
The exahust remains clean and less smelly, I don't get black smoke from the exhuast when I start her up cold (as before the CC). Performance is a bit less strong with the leaner jets, but certainly adequate for the daily driving I do. Idle remains smooth, as does acceleration. No driveability problems to report. Gas mileage is up around 3 mpg city with the leaner jets installed.
Inside the converter, (it's the last part of the exhaust system) you can see that the parts are still clean and shiny.
All in all, I'd say so far I am very satified with the modification. Perhaps the only caveat is push starting, which the Powerglide supports, but the converter won't like. Some experts say a misfire can destroy the converter, but so far I haven't been in that situation. And I've push started modern cars (with stick shift) with no apparent damage at all. My only remaining issue is positioning the device, which exits out at the of the car. It sticks out a bit, and I have a metal surround over it to protect passersby against getting burned from the hot metal, which works, but rattles as it contacts the rear grille. I have to modify these parts to eliminate the rattle by securing them better and allowing better clearance. Like they say, "if only I had the time..."
I've been devoting all my spare time to a minor customization of my car, I've gotten her back from the paint shop (she looks sharp!) and I've added a "what-if" customization theme..."what if Chevy had offered a Z03 Super Sport package to the '69 Monza?"
That in another post.
