<VV> The 304 cam's intent!

Just what was the 304 cam designed to do after all?? It is my understanding
toward the end of GM's responsibility to supply parts for the long
discontinued Corvair that this was the ONLY camshaft that was available
regardless of what year size or configuration engine you wanted a cam for.
Was it a happy medium that worked in everything from 80's to 180's? Or was
there a performance side to this cam. Your thoughts gentlemen!
