        These are just a
few of the trips and items being auctioned at the C.L.A.S.S. Act III
event to raise money for Kearney Public Schools.

 The event will
feature 250 items in a silent auction and 23 items in a live auction,
said Coleen Bacon, C.L.A.S.S. Act coordinator.

 Jayne Meyer,
steering committee chairwoman, said the auction and dinner is to raise
money for school programs not funded by tax dollars.

 “It’s
important because our kids are our future,” Meyer said. “The people of
our community want to see our kids get the best education possible.
This allows them to get things a little above the norm.”

 Money
raised at the June 7 event funds academics, athletics, technology, drug
and alcohol education and safety and security.

Donations can be designated to specific categories, Meyer said.

Meyer said after the event, foundation members decide what the money will fund based on submissions from schools.

“Our money is for anything tax dollars can’t be used on,” Meyer said. “It’s based on the greatest need.”

The foundation also saves 20 percent of the money raised in
anticipation of using it in the future for a larger project, Meyer said.

Other items being auctioned include a Geo. Spencer wine and food
package, a Denny’s Photography package, autographed apparel by
professional baseball player Drew Anderson, a Platte River father and
child waterfowl hunt, Good Samaritan Hospital Wellness Center family
membership, martial arts lessons, a year membership at the YMCA,
Pottery Barn partyware and a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Tickets cost $50, and the event is open to the public.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dinner starts at 7:30 p.m.

For more information or for tickets call the KPS Foundation office at 698-8030.

C.L.A.S.S. Act's Big Effect

In its first two years, C.L.A.S.S. Act raised more than $250,000.

The money paid for new reading and keyboarding curricula, classroom
projectors and playground equipment for elementary schools, a new
reading curriculum for middle schools, classroom projectors and
computer monitors for the high school and a new drug and alcohol
curriculum, the ConnectEd phone message system, music curriculum
software and field turf funds for the district.

 Last year, the
funds paid for the Reading A-Z Program, math and logic workshops, math
supplements and technology for elementary schools, anti-bullying
education, a student and staff seminar by Steven Layne, LCD projectors
at the middle schools, computers and technology, two-way radios for
security at the high school, and a projection system for the Kearney
High School auditorium, and provided field turf funds for the district.
